Hi-Pot Test

Hi-Pot Test

During inspections of electrical products, Asia Quality Inspectors is able to perform Hi-Pot (high potential) tests to verify electrical insulation and to ensure safety and reliability in finished appliances, cables, circuit boards and motors.

These tests apply a voltage that is much higher than during normal operation and that puts the voltage on the insulation and capacitors of a product.

This test can help detect design errors, defects, insulation pressure, loose wires, conductive or corrosive conductive or corrosive copper that surround conductors, terminal spacing problems, and tolerance errors in IDC cables.

If there is a leak in the insulation, this can cause the product to break and is also highly dangerous for anyone who is in contact with the defective product.

There are 3 common types of Hi-Pot tests:

  • Dielectric rupture test – During this test, the voltage is increased until the dielectric fails or breaks, in order to determine the highest voltage the cable can handle. The dielectric is usually destroyed in this test, so it is done on the basis of a random sample.
  • Dielectric Strength Tensile Test – This test is performed to see if the cable can withstand a certain amount of voltage for a required amount of time. The leakage current is controlled during the test and must be below a preset limit in order to pass the test. This test is not destructive.
  • Insulation Resistance Testing – The purpose of this test is to determine the insulation resistance of the product. By measuring the voltage and current, the insulation resistance can be calculated.
